Isabella of France
Isabelle Capet
Queen consort of England (1308 - 1327)
Queen Dowager (1327 - 1358)
Known as 'the She-Wolf of France' Isabella and her lover Roger Mortimer were instrumental in arranging the deposition of Edward II (1327)
She and her lover were not guilty of arranging Edward II's brutal murder in Berkeley Castle
Instead the deposed king took vows as a Franciscan monk and resided in Europe until his death (1341)
Isabella and Roger Mortimer then shared the regency for Edward III (1327 - 1330)
The queen mother and Mortimer were overthrown by Edward III when he reached his majority
Mortimer was executed, being discovered in the queen's own chamber. Isabella's pleas for his life were ignored
As queen mother she was forced into honourable retirement but remained an important part of the family
The story that Isabella later became insane is based on no known facts
