Fredegonde became the mistress (c563) and then second queen (568) of Chilperic I of Neustria
Represented as a monster of cruelty, Fredegonde arranged the divorce of the King from his first wife Audovera. The murder of Chilperic’s second wife Galswintha made Fredegonde the mortal enemy of her sister-in-law the famous Queen Brunhilda. Fredegonde also arranged for the assassination of Bishop Praetextatus whilst at prayer in his cathedral at Rouen (577). After the king she realized the king had discovered her adultery fredegonde caused Chilperic to be murdered in order to escape retribution. Despite her evil life Queen Fredegonde died peacefully in her bed.
